Educational Seminar

Bias in HR: How to Mitigate the Impact

December 3, 2014
9:00 am - 4:30 pm

People are hardwired to discriminate. We all possess hidden negative prejudices and stereotypes that we often times do not even recognize we have…bias that is beyond the reach of our normal range of awareness. This is unconscious bias, and it is buried deep within our subconscious minds.

As professionals, we need to understand that our brains automatically make note of detectable human differences when we meet someone, even those of us consciously committed to egalitarianism. Then, we need to acknowledge that we often unwittingly act on these hidden thoughts.

In this innovative seminar, we will challenge the idea that all bias is bad and examine a process to systematically anticipate, recognize and respond to varying expectations of groups with diverse backgrounds. While it is, of course, our fundamental belief that egregious displays of discriminatory behaviors must be clearly dealt with; we see the far greater organizational problem being the large number of unconscious decisions that are made by people who do not even realize the bias in their behavior.
We will conduct interactive experiential exercises to include a comparison of the value we attribute to candidates based simply on viewing their skill sets on paper to the value we attribute after laying eyes on them in an interview. We will examine the concept of “organizational unconscious” and its impact on areas such as recruiting, hiring, performance reviews, promotions and advancement. And you will walk away with five key strategies to mitigate the impact of unconscious bias in decision-making and talent management processes.
