President's Letter

April 2006

If you’ve read my previous letters and think I’m all wet, you’d be right – at least this month. I spent several unplanned hours in the car yesterday dodging floods and trying to get home safely. It gave me a lot of time to think – about unexpected storms, life in general, and Dallas HR in particular.

While we can’t avoid some storms along the way, there are definitely ways we can prepare for them. In our unpredictable HR world, storms can come in the form of restructurings, business downturns, actual hurricanes - and the kind of storm that comes in an innocent looking envelope from a plaintiff’s attorney or government entity such as the EEOC or OFCCP. If you’re concerned about the last variety, I’d highly recommend you come to our Employment Law Conference on April 11th. It’s being presented by Epstein, Becker, & Green, P.C., and will give you solid, up-to-date information on how to protect yourself and your organization in these litigious times.

While April tends to be more wet than dry, May is a completely different story. Please mark your calendar for our Annual Boss’s Day Luncheon and Silent Auction on May 9th benefiting the SHRM Foundation. It’s always a fun time and a chance to scarf up on some great deals donated by a wide variety of generous contributors. If your company would like to be among that group, please get in touch with Chris Luttrell, our SHRM Foundation Chair, or any member of the Silent Auction Committee. As an incentive, each donor will receive a complimentary Dallas HR luncheon and a chance to win a free ad on Dallas HR’s website. A good deal for the donor organization – and as importantly, a good deal for the SHRM Foundation. Be sure to bring your checkbook to the luncheon!

In other news (but back on the topic of preparing for a rainy day,) our Spring PHR/SPHR exam study group is hard at work, and our Professional Emphasis Groups (PEGs) are going strong. The PEG fair held at our March luncheon was a great success, thanks to all who volunteered to host it, and several new PEGs are in the offing. If you ‘d like to join one of the existing PEGs or have a keen interest in starting one, please get in touch with Janet Blair, our PEG Director. Note that our Benefit PEG is rocking and rolling – and hosting a breakfast on April 25th that will likely attract quite a turnout.

As you can see, there’s a lot going on and many ways for you to get out of the rain and get involved. Hope to see you at Dallas HR soon!

Carol Hollen, SPHR
