In every organization and home in America, it could be said that communication could use either a little or a lot of improvement. We can also correctly add that communication is an essential ingredient for personal and professional success. So with such a universal need and a terrific payout we are always looking for practical ways to improve it…communication that is.

Let’s get right to an important assumption (even though you are not supposed to make these). You will never be able to fill of the communication needs of another person because of the following: They may have missed something the first time; the way you communication may not have been clear; they were not interested at the time of initial communication but they are now…you get the idea.

With all of these potential barriers to communication the most practical solution is to recommend to your significant others and your employees that they come to you when they need more or more clear information. That’s the “goes up” part from the title of this article.

This does not remove the need to be as effective as you can when communicating or cascading information, but it just plain isn’t enough to create and maintain an environment of effective communication.

One more thing, be very careful when you get questions. Do not make the person feel stupid for asking for clarification because this will cut the lines of communication quicker than anything else.

So here is the brief speech to folks around you:
“I really want to communicate effectively so I need your agreement that you will ask for clarification or repeat communication. Anyone need clarification?”
