Cleaning Out Your Closet
by Al Lucia |
Do you have some old clothes in your closet at home? Do you have some old ideas in your “closet” at work?
Well maybe it’s time to clean out your closets!
Notice that I didn’t say “wipe out.” More than likely, there are still some very usable (and that is the operative word) items in both closets. The shoes that still fit and are in relatively good shape are like the processes and policies that contribute to your culture and are working reasonably well. But even the best initiatives (and shoes) need to be upgraded (shined) from time to time.
Of course, you will find some clothes that you haven’t worn in a long time – perhaps they don’t fit anymore or maybe they’re simply worn out. If you look carefully, you’ll find some items in your organizational closet that aren’t very serviceable either. These are the items you need to remove and donate to an outside organization. The clothes could go to people less fortunate, and the ineffective policies, high-profile processes and, dare I say, people sent lovingly and legally down the road.
I know it can be difficult to eliminate items we’ve held on to for a long time, especially of the people variety. But just because you’re attached to it doesn’t change the fact that it doesn’t fit anymore. The organizational equivalent of an outdated, tight-fitting suit does no one any good in the long run. Even the suit isn’t happy hanging there in the closet unappreciated and underutilized.
So…build up your courage to tackle the job and know you will feel a lot better when it is accomplished.
