February Monthly Meeting
February 9, 2010
11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
HR—Owner of the Customer Relationship
After all the talk, HR is still not strategic. Managers still claim that HR doesn’t know the business. Yet all that managers expect is the same old, same old—”keep us out of jail, get an economical benefits package, and keep the union out.”
Over the past two decades HR has been an enabler in the process of removing the implied contract of “employee entitlement.” Mission accomplished, but now we have historic lows in employee engagement. How will HR get on top? How will it be valued for doing the most valuable job in an organization? How can HR build a high performing workforce? It will start by understanding the Customer.
Employees no longer work for our organizations. So who do they work for—our customers, that’s who. A short line of sight between employees and customers raises commitment and performance. HR has to understand the bridge that connects committed employees and loyal customers. This is a new strategic role that puts HR at the center of business. HR has to rethink its role from aligning with the business to create shareholder value to align with customers to create stakeholder value. Risky, yes! But our employees and customers will demand it, post-recession.
