What is an Upstander?

Using historical examples, this program breaks down the stereotypical views of Upstander and bystander behaviors. Participants are asked to reflect on their choices and encouraged to take steps toward Upstander behavior.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the complexity of human behavior - Participants are able to break down the social stereotypes set for Upstander and bystander behavior.
  • Use historical examples to analyze professional choices - Participants can study the choices historical Upstanders to reflect on the professional choices they make to be an Upstander.
  • Analyze organizational and personal Upstander skills - Participants are able to give concrete examples of what it means to be an Upstander in their professional life.

Charlotte Decoster, PhD
Dallas Holocaust & Human Rights Museum
Charlotte is the Senior Director of Education for the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. An experienced educator, she has researched, taught, and written on Holocaust history. She holds a PhD in History from the University of North Texas. She regularly speaks on the Holocaust, children, and child rescue during the Holocaust, and in Nazi Germany. She has travelled throughout the U.S. to give talks on Anne Frank and child rescue during the Holocaust.

IMPORTANT: Advance registrations are strongly recommended. Due to catering requirements, we cannot guarantee seating for onsite registrants. To receive cancellation credit, your written request must be received at DallasHR by 12:00 noon, no later than the Friday before the meeting.

Payment is due with registration. No POs or requests for invoicing can be honored. Checks should be made payable and mailed (to be received no later than the Friday before the meeting) to the DallasHR Office.

Chapter members and guests are not allowed to bring and/or distribute marketing collateral or material other than business cards to any chapter event except paid, sponsoring businesses. Violation of this policy will result in dismissal from the meeting and confiscation of materials. Opportunities to promote products and services are available. Please make arrangements to be on time. Lunch service will cease when the luncheon presentation begins. This is a rule set by the HR Certification Institute for presentations that are approved for credit. Attendees who arrive after 11:45 AM may not be served lunch and your seat may be released to onsite registration attendees.
